ANALYZING THE USE OF PAST TENSE IN RECOUNT TEXTS WRITTEN BY GRADE NINE STUDENTS

The goal of this research was to know the use of simple past in and the problems faced by students’ in making writing recount text at SMP Yaspita Serpong Utara. The research method used in this study is qualitative research. The population of this research was students IX 1 at Smp Yaspita Serpong Utara. The sample consisted of 35 students taken from this class. The data were collect by writing task and multiple choice. The researcher classifies the structure based on Paldrige theory focusing on the thematic Progression of writing recount text, including Past Continuous, Past Perfect, and Simple Past Tense. The most common type of tenses made by students is Past Perfect Tense with 17 students or 45% of total students. This tense type is dominated by tenses because the student can understand the structure clearly than other tenses. The second tense is Past Continuous Tense with 12 or 35% of total students. The last tense was the third and last tense made by students, with a total of 7 or 20% of the total students. The lowest tense rate is the Simple Past Tense. The data shows that many ninth grade students of SMP Yaspita Serpong Utara had more variety in writing recount texts.
