This research explores typical errors Cambodian EFL learners make at the B2 or Intermediate level while writing a compare-and-contrast essay. It closely investigates three important aspects: spelling mistakes, subject-verb agreement and essay structure requirements. Fifteen essays were collected under timed conditions and qualitatively analyzed for recurring patterns that may also provide some indication of possible error causes. The results show that spelling errors are normally phonetic induced or overgeneralization of certain spelling rules in English, whereas errors in verb tenses normally relate to irregularities or wrong conjugation. Concerning the essay structure, most of the students do not master how to do logical thinking arrangements, efficient paragraph transition, and clear thesis statements. These findings highlight very specific problems that Cambodian EFL students experience in essay writing for academic purposes and, therefore, provide useful recommendations for language instructors who would like to include such issues in lesson plans and improve EFL learners writing skills.
